Tour of Tomorrow Bike Ride

Last Friday, July 20th, I participated in the annual Bi-State “Tour of Tomorrow” bike ride. This terrific 40+ mile ride was organized by Cycle Oregon and the Urban Greenspaces Institute as a way for elected officials, planners, transportation advocates, and other local decision makers to connect and tour our region’s bike path network.

We rode from South Waterfront through Sellwood and all the way up into Vancouver, WA. We toured all around Vancouver and then back to South Waterfront through North and Northeast Portland. Each time the group took a break, we heard from experts about gaps in the bike transportation system and improvements on the horizon. Metro President David Bragdon gave an inspiring speech about the importance of completing our regional bike network and specific ideas for making it happen. He and three other Metro Councilors rode the full route, along with senior planners and Bureau directors from both Portland and Vancouver, leaders of local non-profits, Tri-Met, OHSU, staff of other elected officials, and many other outstanding people. It was an off-and-on rainy day, but still very pleasant for biking. By the end, after about 8 hours of riding, we were pretty tired, but we got a great sense for where bike transportation is right now and how we can improve it for the future. You can read more about the ride and see photos on Jonathan Maus’s terrific blog at BikePortland.
