Newbery Award winning author Lois Lowry in Portland March 11th

Though her writing has encompassed topics as diverse as the Holocaust and the Triangle Fire, dystopian societies, Maine in the 1970s and second grade classrooms, author Lois Lowry’s books have consistently dealt with a central theme: the importance of human connections.
The community will have an opportunity to hear from the Newbery Award-winning author when she presents Multnomah County Library’s 2008 Children’s Author Lecture on Tuesday, March 11, at 7 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 1126 S.W. Park Ave. in Portland. A book sale and author signing will follow the talk. This is the eleventh year of the Children’s Author Lecture and Lowry was the inaugural speaker in 1998.
Lowry is the author of Number the Stars (winner of the 1990 Newbery Medal), The Giver (winner of the 1994 Newbery Medal) and its two companion books, Gathering Blue and Messenger. Lowry’s latest work, The Willoughbys, coming in spring 2008, should demonstrate Lowry’s talent to skillfully mix the comic and the tragic in a way that makes them enticing to readers both young and old. Her book Gossamer, has been adapted for the stage and Oregon Children’s Theatre will premier it in Portland in October 2008.

Ticket sales support the library’s outreach to local schools, providing books, transportation, lecture tickets and a chance to meet the author to hundreds of students from schools that normally could not afford an author visit, says Katie O’Dell, the library’s reading promotions coordinator. This year’s beneficiaries are students at Powell Valley Elementary and Mt. Scott Learning Center.
