Oregon Hope Initiative
Jeff Cogen was featured in the Sunday Oregonian in an Opinion piece by David Sarasohn on Education. The concept is to follow the lead of various U.S. states and foreign countries and make higher education more widely available. This would help our economy, our primary and secondary schools, and above all our people. What do you think?

My daughter has her master's degree and working on her PhD. During her education she worked up to 3 jobs (not fast-food either) to pay her way and didn't have to rely on handouts from government.
The best education students can get is real-world experience. To try and shove "free education" (which we all know isn't free) deprives students from learning even the basics of taking care of their own selves.
You say "follow the lead of various U.S. states and foreign countries" I'd follow the lead of schools where students are encouraged to achieve, where the best instructors are kept and bad ones removed, and the focus is competitive achievement.
Anything less is simply supporting something other than academic achievement.

Education is a huge part of the real world. Rather than making people work at what are usually irrelevant jobs to obtain their educational objectives, we should be working to provide educated people with appropriate employment that advances the student, the society, and humanity at large.
