Event will spotlight unpaid family caregivers

From Multnomah County Aging & Disability Services:
For most caregivers in Oregon, coming home means starting their second shift of work. The majority of Oregon's 420,000 unpaid family caregivers are employed full or part-time. Instead of sitting down to rest their feet and minds, they have to care for the house, sometimes their children, and most often, their parents, spouse or other loved one.

In an effort to support local caregivers, Multnomah County Aging & Disability Services, Legacy Health System and AARP are hosting a special screening of the PBS documentary “Caring for Your Parents” The documentary is an intimate portrayal of the challenges and rewards typically experienced by the 34 million caregivers age 18 years or older in the U.S. In addition to the screening, there will be a resource fair featuring a variety of local elder care services starting at 12:30 p.m. and a panel discussion with area aging experts, immediately following the documentary.

The event will be held:
Saturday, June 14, starting at 12:30 p.m.
Documentary screening at 1:30 p.m.
Lorenzen Conference Center on the Legacy Emanuel Campus
2801 N. Gantenbein
Portland, Oregon 97227

"Many people do not realize that caregiving is happening at home and not in facilities. This film tells the stories of five families who have dealt with the multitude of issues of caregiving at home," said Loriann McNeill, family caregiver coordinator. "The resource fair and panel will help our community of caregivers find the tips, tools and resources that can help their caregiving journey."

The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Due to limited space, please RSVP at 503-413-8018.
