Do you really know what you are eating?
According to Multnomah County's health officer, Gary Oxman, people routinely underestimate what calories are in our foods. So, my co-workers and I decided to figure out what calories were in our favorite foods. With all the chatter around Jeff's proposed menu labeling policy, we thought we'd put our money where our mouths were...so to speak. I'll give you the scandalous details after the jump. Do you know what you are really eating? Take the fast food quiz.
Marissa's fave: Starbucks Iced mocha
She thought it might have 200 calories but it was 330.
Karol's fave: Burgerville halibut sandwich
I thought it was 300 calories but it was 410.
Warren's fave: Burgerville Tillamook cheese burger
He didn't think anything about it, to tell the truth. Well, that burger is 630 calories.
I have to say, I got an Americano this morning - no latte - because it's a very light 15 calories.

It's a no brainer to have this information available to diners. Those who don't want to read it, or don't care about what they are eating, can ignore it. However, it will certainly compel some franchises to change the way they deliver goods to the consumer, if the consumer demands healthier alternatives. Hopefully people are starting to wake up and smell the coffee - please hold the cream and sugar!

Apparently, I have no idea what I am eating. I just did the little quiz and completely struck out.

Thanks so much for championing the menu labeling in Multnomah County! It is a great way to empower people to make healthier choices.
