Menu labeling could become a "Food Fight"
Jeff is making news today with his proposed menu labeling policy. This, from the Willamette Week:
The Multnomah County Board of Commissioners is set to vote July 31 on a proposal by Commissioner Jeff Cogen and the county health department requiring chain restaurants to put calorie counts on menus.
The premise: Reading that your grande peppermint white-chocolate mocha packs 530 calories, or that your ultimate bacon cheeseburger has 1,060, will scare diners into eating and drinking healthier.
The proposed policy goes before the Board on July 31st.

It's not always easy to tell which food option is the best choice for keeping our weight down. As a consumer, I'd love to have accurate information on the calories in menu options.

Right now diabetes and obesity is taking over our younger population. The side effects of being fat all your life is a dead liver. Nobody knows more than me about the hassles of doing insulin twice a day. Human Fat has memory, it will store way more then it burns and since we have become an urban population fat is more dangerous then before.
I think calories is a great way to start to reevaluate our food choices. I am tired of watching careless parents destroy and potentially kill their children by allowing them to eat all this high fat and high sugar foods. Maybe instead of menu labeling we should tax higher the parents who intentially stuff their children with pounds of excess fat then demand medical treatment when their kids get sick with diabetes, high blood pressure, and all the other health problems that go along with obesity. There is already a liver diease that has no cure called NASH. You can only find it on a liver biospy, and like me when you finally find out you have it, it is to late to reverse the damage done by years of excess fat around my organs. This issues is real and will not go away.
Pay attention now, or read the obituaries later. More money into education will be wasted if we do not take a positive action to stop the children from being unable to live past 30 due to severe obesity. All foods should be equally labeled, Lets start with calories and go directly to carbs and fats.

Thanks for doing this, Jeff!
Consumers deserve this information.

I love the idea! I just wish we could mandate it for all restaurants (although I do understand the cost implications may be too much for small local restaurants).
These issues take courageous and forward thinking leaders like you to make a difference! Thanks.
