Animal House adoption party was a success!
From Animal Serives' Mike Oswald:
Whether we volunteer our “extra” time, make animal care our life’s work, or choose to adopt our pets from the shelter, we do it from the heart—and for the animals! When we all came together on Friday, Aug 1st, to dedicate a day to adopting MCAS animals, the results were spectacular. FORTY-ONE volunteers showed up to help out, dedicating a whopping 216+ hours to the cause. Some stayed the entire 13 hours; some worked all day and volunteered all evening. All came with a “can-do” attitude and enjoyed mingling with the public, staff, and other volunteers. Multnomah County Chair Ted Wheeler and his family joined us in the celebration.
Conservative estimates put the crowd at approximately 1,000 visitors to the shelter—an all-time, one-day record. And, believe it or not, people were adopting pets right up until midnight! In fact, “Starlight” (pictured, right) one of our foster kittens, left as the clock struck 12 o’clock. People adopting Gracie, a long-term shelter resident, were finishing up paperwork as we closed. At the end of the day, 15 cats and 8 dogs were adopted, for a grand total of 23 adoptions (on an average Friday in August, 268 people visit the shelter, and 2 dogs and 4 cats are adopted into a home).
The music began at 11 a.m. and continued until 10 p.m. Although not included in the “official” volunteer count, these men and women gave 1-3 hours of their time and created a feeling of festivity throughout the shelter. We were lucky to have such a wide variety of great music the entire day. By all accounts—crowd size, adoption numbers, and feedback from the public, volunteers and staff—the day was a success! In fact, keep those togas handy—we’re looking to make it an annual event!
