Low-Car Diet Update - Week 3
A few things I've learned on the car-less trail:
1) I love walking at least five miles a day. I'm so much nicer.
2) Commuting to work without a car is easy, and I plan to keep commuting by bus/train. I might even give up my PARKING SPOT.
3) (This could be the car-withdrawal talking) I still love my car.
This sentiment recalls a classic scene from the movie Singles. Steve pitches the Mayor a "Supertrain" as a traffic buster. The mayor's response: "People love their cars."
I love that movie too.
Maybe I'd love my car less if we lived closer-in and closer to zip-cars, or didn't have a family prone to random maladies (Current injury: Husband - broken foot). When this low-car diet is over, I'll keep Little Leisel around, but be happy to drive her much, much less, maybe even only when it's medically necessary. (Note to self: perhaps the first step in letting go of your car is not naming it.)
But that's me. Karol Collymore, my colleague and low-car diet buddy, has decided to graduate from low-car to NO car. Karol, for those of you who don't know, is a total stud. She writes, she cooks, she sets a sustainable example for us all. She's found that with several zip cars and bus lines steps from her door, she doesn't need her car anymore and she's getting rid of it.
Karol, we salute you!

I find that no-car success requires an amazing amount of mental discipline. When I leave the house I have to stay in the moment, no thinking about the trip allowed! And I don't allow myself to mentally debate the issue cause I can easily talk myself out of walking or biking. I feel so much better when I bike, walk, or bus.
