Donate food, clothes for those in need
Multnomah County Chair Ted Wheeler recently joined with leaders the Oregon Food Bank, Human Solutions and Northwest Pilot Project to challenge the community to donate food, winter clothing and other essentials to support people in need.
Oregon Food Bank’s “Most wanted foods” are:
•canned meats, such as tuna, chicken and salmon
•canned or boxed meals, such as soup, chili, stew, macaroni and cheese
•peanut butter
•canned or dried beans or peas
•pasta or rice
•cereal
•canned fruits
•fruit juice in cans, plastic bottles or boxes

Human Solutions is operating the county’s Family Warming Center in Northeast Portland. The center opened in December and will remain a haven for homeless families trying to get in out of the cold until April. They need:
•sheets, pillows and bedding
•winter coats, hats and gloves for both adults and children
•warm socks
•personal hygiene kits, including wash clothes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and deodorant
Northwest Pilot Project provides housing services to helps low-income seniors or those who are in danger of becoming homeless. The agency helps seniors reach and maintain a level of independent living by providing in-home services and other resources. The agency needs:
•bedding, including sheets (twin or double), pillow cases and pillows
•bath towels
•shower curtains and rings
•laundry baskets
•new or good condition/used kitchen items, including plates, coffee mugs, bowls, glassware, utensils and cooking pans/pots
Donations will be accepted at the Multnomah Building, 501 SE Hawthorne, from 7 AM to 6 PM Monday through Friday. Additional locations will be added and a complete list will be available here.
