Cogen Led Alternative Fuel Vehicle Workgroup Issues Report to Governor
Today the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Workgroup chaired by Commissioner Jeff Cogen issued its final report to Governor Kulongoski. The 65 page report charts the course for Oregon to play a major role in a new transportation system—-one run largely on electricity and other alternative fuels. The report was produced by a taskforce that included key leaders in the automotive, utility, high-technology, government, higher-education and non-profit sectors. Here are links to Jeff's op-ed from Friday's Oregonian and Anna Griffin's column on the workgroup that ran on Saturday.
EVs emit significantly fewer greenhouse gas emissions than current cars, even when the electricity is generated with fossil fuels because they are up to three times more efficient with the energy they use than gasoline engines. However, the environmental benefits will be truly significant when we begin using renewable energy to generate 25% or more of our electricity. The taskforce report lays out a blueprint for how Oregon can make its transportation system more sustainable and grow Oregon's existing cluster of electric vehicle related businesses. Recommendations for what Oregon can do to speed the transformation of our transportation system from one reliant on fossil fuels to one that runs largely on electricity and other alternative fuels were the focus of the report.
